Assin North by-election: NDC abusing jail-bound James Gyakye Quayson — Egyapa Mercer

A Deputy Minister of Energy, Andrew Egyapa Mercer has stated that deposed Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson is bound for jail.

The Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency is of the view that the Mr Gyakye Quayson has allowed himself to abused by the NDC party ahead of the Assin North by-election.

According to him, James Gyakye Quayson is brazenly contesting the by-election knowing very well he will be eventually jailed.

“It is important that they retain the NPP Parliamentary candidate to Parliament. In any event, this gentleman who is talking, I don’t know but the NDC is abusing him, he is willingly the Gyakye Quayson man, he is willingly participating in that abuse. I am clear in my mind that he is headed for jail, based on Adamu Sakande’s precedent that was said that if you make a declaration which intends to be false, you have committed a crime. I believe in section 180 of the criminal offences Act. He will be incarcerated,” Egyapa Mercer shared in an interview with TV3.

The Deputy Minister of Energy further argued, “I expect that he will go to jail because, but of course at the time that you were standing, at the time that he declared that, he owed no allegiance to any country, he presented the argument that the man had tended his application to the Canadian authorities really? You apply for admission to the University of Ghana (UG), Roland you have applied to UG, you haven’t gotten admission you say you have started lectures because you have applied, where is that ever said? Can you begin lectures without an application lecture?”

In the past, former Member of Parliament for Bawku Central in the Upper East Region, Adamu Daramani Sakande was sentenced to two years in prison for holding a dual citizenship case by an Accra Fast Track High Court on July 28, 2012.

The court presided over by Lawyer Justice Charles Quist had found him guilty on charges of false declaration of office or voting, perjury and deceiving a public officer.
