James Gyakye Quayson has declared that he will be contesting the Assin North by-election on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, he is determined to serve the people of the Constituency to change their fortunes and bring development to the various communities.

“When I took the decision to put myself forward as a candidate for the 2020 Parliamentary Election in the Assin North constituency, on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), I did so with a determination to serve the people of the constituency with all my heart, soul, body and all the resources I could muster in the service of my people,” James Gyakye Quayson noted in a release.

He continued, “My roots in the Assin North Constituency run deep and all I wanted was the opportunity to meet the needs of my people on a larger scale. The Assin North Constituency lives in abject stagnation as a result of years of neglect.”

James Gyakye Quayson was elected MP for Assin North at the end of the 2020 General Election.

In May 2023, he was found guilty of contesting the polls while holding dual citizenship.

As a result, the Supreme Court directed that Parliament expunges his name from its records, making the Assin North parliamentary seat vacant.

Addressing the accusation in his statement to declare his intention to contest the Assin North by-election, James Gyakye Quayson says he is innocent.

He argued that he renounced his Canadian citizenship in December 2019, and returned to Ghana to serve the people of Assin North.

He explained that when he declared on his Nomination Forms in October 2020 that he owed no allegiance to any country other than Ghana, that was, indeed, the truth.
