Offer pro bono services to the needy, legal aid is not well-resourced – Chief Justice to new lawyers

Chief Justice (CJ), Kwasi Anin-Yeboah has implored newly inducted lawyers to consider offering free services to persons who need their services but cannot afford.

According to the Chief Justice, persons in such categories may not be favoured by law owing to the fact that they could not pay for the services of legal representatives.

Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah made this remark during an event when 196 new legal practitioners were called to the bar after going through mandatory legal education.

In his address, he urged legal practitioners to uphold the ethics of the profession.

“Take ethics of the legal profession more seriously at this early stage of your career by developing good habits. Don’t be driven by the emotions of your clients. It is therefore unethical and unprofessional for a lawyer to mislead a court by deliberate falsehood. Strive to be known as a noble lawyer who can be trusted. You must try to protect your integrity. You must also endeavour to maintain a professional appearance at all times, and be mindful of your temperament and demeanour. Show respect to your seniors at the chambers and courts.

“Develop the practice of offering pro bono cases for the needy. Even though legal aid is not well-resourced, you have to do the best you can to help the needy and the vulnerable in society. Help build mother Ghana by being on the side of the truth,” the Chief Justice entreated.
