The Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN), the student wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated that it plans to embark on a nationwide demonstration to protest against the new appointments made to the Electoral Commission (EC).
Last month President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed three new commissioners and swore them into office to begin work.
Out of the three, one in particular, Dr. Peter Appiahene has been tagged as a known member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with videos released to show how he has been defending the party and hitting out at the opposition National Democratic Congress.
With calls for the withdrawal of the appointment failing to yield any fruit, NDC TEIN has taken a decision to protest.
In a statement signed by Deputy National TEIN Coordinator Ekow Djan, it has given President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to get rid of Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Appiahene in two weeks.
“Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Peter Appiahene, who until their appointments served as Patrons for the University of Ghana and the University of Energy and Natural Resources branches of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) respectively.
“Patrons of TESCON, a student wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are politically exposed persons who do not qualify to hold any position in the Independent Electoral Commission of Ghana as enshrined in the 1992 of Constitution of Ghana.
“TEIN, therefore, asks President Akufo-Addo to get rid of Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Appiahene within two weeks. We have begun talks with the Ghana Police Service as we prepare for a nationwide protest over their appointments,” the NDC TEIN release said.
