The 8th Parliament, A Curse Or Blessing To Our Democracy?

Feature Article The 8th Parliament, A Curse Or Blessing To Our Democracy?
DEC 22, 2022 LISTEN

The 8th parliament was trumpeted to be the one that would bring proper scrutiny to all government businesses that would come to the House. This is because of the equal numerical strength of the members of both sides. Hence, it was going to stop the rub stamp activities that we saw in the past parliaments since we came back to constitutional rule (1992)

However, recent rampant filibusterism and cabalism have so far truncated the smooth deliberations we all anticipated. Having a hung Parliament means all bills were going to be subjected to due diligence before they were passed and which we need as a people to boost the development of the country.

What an embarrassment it is now to see adult and honourable members behaving like KG kids fighting over the ownership of a table in a class. Instead of engaging intellectually to arrive at a common consensus, all we see from the very first day was a sort of jungle warfare and which has continued unabated as we just saw in the recent melee that allegedly led to the hospitalisation of a member of parliament.

For how long must these disgraceful and dishonourable men and women take the entire nation for granted? We voted for you to present us through the proper decision making that will help us see some level of development and not waste taxpayers money without any fruitful deliberations. It will be morally unfair for these MPs to receive any sitting allowances for all the other times they have humiliated themselves including the whole nation. I'm impressively disappointed in our MPs for this particular parliament. Are they no laws to hold these irresponsible MPs responsible for what they keep doing to us?

Technology has made it impossible to hide such barbaric, savage, uncouth, and irresponsible behaviours in an august place like parliament. Therefore, our MPs must be meticulous with their parliamentary proceedings to prevent public ignominious that make the citizens a laughing stock in the eyes of the global community.

Furthermore, our MPs must know that they have families and friends who take delight in watching their work in the house. They also have the youth of this country who look up to many of them as their role models in life. What good standards are they setting by their wayward actions? It may be the case that a lot of these MPs found their way into the House through weird means hence the jungle lifestyle they exhibit without considering how honourable they are.

If another institution does what they do now, would parliament have the moral right to call them to order? Please, someone should tell my MP I didn't vote for him to go and wrestle or compete in boxing but to represent me in doing government business that will bring development to my village. Unfortunately, he is a first-timer and might not even like the behaviour of some of his colleagues in the House because; I know him to be a gentleman par excellence.

Ghanaians are watching!
