The operations of China Mall on the Spintex Road have been halted following the failure of management to comply with the new VAT system introduced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
On Monday, October 19, the enforcement team of the GRA locked the Chinese retail shop and its warehouses on Spintex Road and Ashaiman in the Greater Accra region.
It can be recalled that on October 1, the Ghana Revenue Authority commenced the implementation of an Electronic VAT system aimed at sealing leakages leading to revenue losses.
Today, the enforcement team of the GRA paid a visit to China Mall to ascertain whether the electronic VAT system is being complied with.
Due to the management of the retail centre’s inability to fix their tax electronic collection system to enable the GRA to access the data, the Mall has been locked.
Speaking to the media, GRA Accra Area Enforcement Manager Joseph Annan stressed that the action is very necessary.
“This is just for them to fix their system for the electronic VAT. We have engaged them on several occasions to get this simple system fixed. The place shall be sealed and locked until they comply with the law. This is part of the Enforcement exercise which we are doing at all the China Mall branches,” Joseph Annan shared.
During the exercise today, the enforcement team of GRA was met with a demonstration by some workers but remained resolute.
According to the GRA officials, the exercise will be extended to all other branches of China Mall.
