Bono East: Road Safety Commission takes stringent measures to reduce road accidents

The Road Safety Commission has assured stringent measures to help reduce road accidents in the region as that was a major threat to the socio-economic development of the region.

The Commission has undertaken activities including road safety education in schools, tracking information on all transport unions in the region for regulations and inspection, and educates drivers on the need to practice defensive driving among others.

Mr Emmanuel Akyeampong Parry Bono East Region officer for the commission in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday in Techiman, the Bono East Regional Capital noted that as part of an effort to improve sanity in the transport operations in the region, it again embarked on training for Tricycle operators popularly known as “Pragiya”, in the major townships such as Kintampo and Techiman of the region.

Mr Parry explained that even though the region was young in terms of the required mechanisms, the commission annually organizes road inspections with the various stakeholders including the Transport Unions, Residents, the Security Agencies, Driver-Vehicle Licenses Authority (DVLA), and Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in finding out the actual cause of road accidents in the area.

According to Mr. Parry, the number of road accidents recording between Januarys to March 2021, was 82, out of these accidents, a total number of 38 persons lost their lives, while 125 sustained various degrees of injuries.

He mentioned that 54 motorbikes were also involved in accidents and 21 persons lost their lives and the number of pedestrian knock down were 20 respectively.

Mr Parry disclosed that about 1,500 tricycles have been registered in the region and measures were being put in place to regulate them so as to reduce accidents in their area of operations.

The officer encourage the cooperation of the transport owners, drivers, pedestrians and the general public in the maintenance of law and order on the roads as that would help everyone contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the region.
