Garu is a district found in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It was a twin district known as Garu-Tempane District until 2017 when Tempane became an independent district. Garu and Tempane are known for gallant sports talents in the region and thanks to God this year's politics has brought so much excitement to the football-loving public. It is the OG 2020 Football Gala currently ongoing in the Garu township organized by Hon. Dominic Azimbe Azumah to celebrate the blissful Union between his friend Mr Obert Antwi and his wife Madam Gloria Azumah(OG).

Who is Hon. Dominic A. Azimbe? He is a peaceful man, a good Daddy and a celebrated politician. Statistically, he is the most successful politician ever in the history of the land. He was MP in 1992, 1996,2004,2008 and 2012 with the NDC Party. His artistic political strategies, delectable problem-solving skills and peaceful nature has earned the accolade"Baba nna" a Hausa way of saying 'Daddy' whilst others call him Doctor because he diagnosis and manage issues better.

The league was scheduled to start on the tenth of October and end on the third December. On the first day of the league saw the oldest colds team in the district(Soccer Stars) playing against Highways Sharp Shooters. It was one goal apiece. What makes this league a historic one?

  • It is the first time teams are playing a league without registration fee
  • The first time all participating teams are given free set of jerseys.
  • The first time all teams are given a free ball each.
  • The first time far away participating teams a supported with transportation.

The man affectionately called MP was there to grace the occassion. Vying as an Independent candidate this time with his 'Noor Yinne Party', he said "You are all aware Garu developed when I was MP including how I bought 11pickups to carry sick people and pregnant women from the hinterlands to town to access healthcare. This time, my target is sports. I'm a sportsman, playing football to as far as to Kumasi those days. If I'm elected, I will develop sports here. ...The winner of this competition will take Gh₵2000, second ₵1000, ʒrd ₵500 and the remaining 13 teams also taking something home. I will take care of the expenses of injured players in the tournament ". The spectators and footballers reacted with a rousing applause. Hon. Dominic is a diehard fan of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Chelsea FC in London. His close allays know him as someone who will sometimes 'hide' indoors when his team looses a match.

Did he really mean what he said? I think yes. Why yes? In the opening match two players got seriously injured. One was headbutted in an attend to clear a corner. He fell and had a blackout for about a minute. As a trained first aider, I ran in to help. After he was revived, I sent him to hospital with a swollen forehead. Another player from the same team was brought in again and guess what he was elbowed on the eye. I took care of them in the hospital in the absence of the coach as the match was still going on. After I bought some injections for them and they were injected, the nurse told me to come and look at the eye. If I was a lay man I could have shouted. I have never seen an eye injury like that as some part was of the eyelid was almost detached from the body but I remember Dr Emmanuel Osei Sarpong told us in the First Aid class to concentrate on managing the casualty rather than sympathizing with them. Hon. Azimbe sent a delegation to pay all the hospital bills for both players including all I spent. After 11:00 pm when eye injured player was player was referred to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, he paid for the ambulance and all bills subsequently. This is amazing. He lived up to his words. These are early signs of an exciting tournament ahead. Could this the reason we have witnessed scintillating soccer? The player was discharged after 3 days.
