Covid-19 heaps misery on Algeria's wilting vineyards

Algerian winemaker Dahmane Hamamouche used to rise early and rush to work each morning, but he no longer bothers, as his firm chokes on a cocktail of woes.

Long accustomed to nasty surprises including unpredictable weather patterns and periodic mildew outbreaks, Algerian vintners are now facing their worst season in decades.

Ghana's Private Sector Commended For COVID-19 Fight

Ghana's private sector has been lauded for its commitment and support in helping the government to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Minister of Planning Professor George Yaw Gyan-Baffour, so far COVID-19 response efforts from the private sector have been overwhelming with the establishment of the Ghana Private Sector COVID-19 Trust Fund.

Fast-track French citizenship plan unveiled for foreigners who fought coronavirus

French authorities have announced they plan to reward foreign health care-workers and other front-line personnel who distinguished themselves in the fight against Covid-19 by fast-tracking citizenship applications for those who want to become French.

Instructions this week from the interior ministry, seen by The Associated Press, ordered regional officials to prioritize naturalization requests from foreigners who "actively participated in the national effort, with devotion and courage” against the pandemic that has killed nearly 31,000 in France.

Marseille, Bordeaux ramp up Covid-19 restrictions in response to virus surge

The French departments of Bouches-du-Rhône and Gironde have tightened social restrictions in a bid to stem the rise in coronavirus infections. Groups gathering in parks or on the beach are to be limited to 10 people, with family events such as weddings also restricted. 

Bordeaux, in the southwest, and the Mediterranean city of Marseille, France's second-biggest city, have emerged as virus hotspots along with the capital Paris, heightening fears of a second wave of coronavirus.

8 New COVID-19 Deaths Push Ghana's Death Toll To 294

Some 8 new COVID-19 related deaths recorded have pushed Ghana's death toll to 294 according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The Ghana Health Service, in its latest COVID-19 update on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, also announced that the country has recorded 29 new cases.

World Democracy Day Observed; Gov't Urged To Be Transparent On COVID-19

As the world continues to count economic losses in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coalition of NGOs under the UN Department of Global Communications (Cunangos) is impressing upon governments to be transparent in all aspects of the COVID-19.

According to the group, it was high time governments became more responsive and accountable in the measures taken to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

NRYN Prepares BECE Candidates for Examination Amid COVID-19

The Northern Regional Youth Network (NRYN) with funding from OXFAM Ghana organised an outreach programme on 7th to 11th September, 2020, in 20 schools based in the Northern to support Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates with COVID-19 coping strategies in a bid to prepare them for the BECE Examination.

Schools visited includes; S. D. A JHS, Manhaliya E/A JHS, Dakpema JHS, Education Ridge JHS, Sagnarigu Model Girls JHS, Bagabaga Demonstration JHS and amongst others.

COVID-9 Has Challenged BECE But You Will Pass---Minister To Students

Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, has expressed the hope that candidates sitting for this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will produce good results despite the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on education.

He said the government had taken steps to ensure students were adequately prepared and added that the examinations kicked off smoothly in the Volta Region.

COVID-19 Deaths In Ghana Now 286 

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed that the number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in Ghana has increased to 286 after three more fatalities were recorded.

The GHS in its latest data on Covid-19 also recorded 46 new cases of the infection, pushing the total case count to 45,434.

India’s parliament reopens with unprecedented Covid safety measures

An 18-day monsoon session of India's parliament has gotten underway with extraordinary safety measures to protect against the coronavirus, including staggered sittings of both Houses and social distancing between MPs.

With 200 of the 785 members of parliament over 65 years of age, and at least seven ministers and two dozen lawmakers recovering from Covid-19 infection, the pandemic has cast a shadow over the session, which takes place after the end of the monsoon season.
