I recently watched a viral video of a KNUST student giving his graduation gown to a hawker, who was a former classmate. This act celebrated both their struggles and their achievements. This is true mark of education: to humbly bestow a gift to humanity, to teach, to have compassion, to stand for what is good, and to possess a keen sense against injustice.
Nevertheless, many people in positions of power lack these wonderful traits. Instead, they actively try to suppress our ability to elevate good people to positions of power. They get rid of them as they ascend, afraid these individuals will expose their crooked ways. In Ghana, Rawlings had foresight to see what most do not: some people are so wicked they will destroy everything and every good heart in their path for glory. Psychopaths, Machiavellians, Narcissists, and just plain nasty people are puppet masters behind most of what we see in world. This begs question: Why do wicked prosper and good suffer? It is former that seems to prevail.
It is my hope that this young man can become a beacon to society, even though those devils will definitely try to snuff out his light. Yet, pure in heart are somehow invincible; even if they fall a thousand times, they manage to rise. There is something nauseating about snobbery of someone who uses education and power to destroy and accumulate. It is something utterly empty. Yet, those empty barrels are celebrated all over world—they are dirty gold, a dirty treasure.
"You knew all books, you did not know love." – David Diop. Let it be known: without love, none of us are anything at all. Let them walk their pathetic journey, gaining world with no satisfaction and trampling on others along way. Even so, they still won't become a God, immortal, or be able to destroy world.
