The third edition of the beauty pageant show organized by the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) under the Department of English at the University of Education, Winneba set high standards on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Lecture Theater 3, North Campus.
The Face of ASSENS 2024 explored the theme “Redefining Beauty to Promote Ghanaian Culture Through Education.” With the language-based departmental association poised for another historic night, the pageant did not disappoint, according to sports broadcaster Ermines Onyema.
Six female contestants, Linda, Irene, Dr. Pat, Abigail, Sedem, and Efe, competed for the queen’s crown, while two male contestants, Kantanka and Kwame, vied for the king’s crown.
After a keenly contested beauty pageant, the individual awards were presented. Contestant number 1, Linda, won two honors: Best Catwalk and Most Photogenic Female. Efe, contestant number 6, was named Most Eloquent. Abigail received the Most Disciplined award, while contestant number 7, a male, was recognized as Most Fashionable and Most Photogenic Male. Kantanka emerged as the Best Performer of the night.
In the feminine category, Patience Numekevor, stage name Dr. Pat, defied the odds to win the Face of ASSENS 2024, surpassing Efe, who was the 1st runner-up, and Abigail, who finished as the 2nd runner-up. Irene placed fourth, Linda fifth, and Sedem sixth. In the male category, Kwame narrowly missed the crown as Kantanka won, becoming the Face of ASSENS 2024.
Sosnationmusic made a grand entry with his new song "Beyond Blessings" in honor of Senior Lecturer Dr. Amma Abrefi Adjei from the Department of English, UEW. International dancers Copain captivated the audience with a stunning performance. Guest MC Asiedu Kwame Philip, the Executive Managing Director at Vision 500 International (Ghana-USA), added his dynamic flair to the grand finale.
In an interview with sports broadcaster Ermines Onyema (ErmBarometer), the newly crowned queen, Dr. Pat, said, “I would say that hard work pays. It wasn’t easy because, in all these things, the other contestants did their part, and I did mine. One thing I know is that if you know you are not good at one side, you should work on the other, and that was what helped me.”
Kantanka, the crowned king of ASSENS, added, “I wanted to just do something and leave the stage, but God knows best. It was really tough, as you said earlier, but then, if something is for you, I don’t think you have to force too much for it. You will definitely get it.”
The main event saw over 700 attendees, including Mr. Stephen Osei Achiaw, UTAG-UEW President, Mr. Ebenezer Ghampson, and Mr. Isaac Owusu Nyarko (Lecturers). Felix Donkor, former UEW-SRC President, Esi Clarke, Miss UEW 2024, Delali Hotor, former GNATOC-UEW Chairperson, and many invited guests and student leaders, including past and current beauty queens from the University of Education, Winneba, were also present.
