A Glitzy Ghana Fashion Week

By Written by Ameyaw Debrah-JAMATI

The fashion world turned its eyes on Ghana from June 27 to July, when Exopa Model Agency hosted its first ever Ghana Fashion Week. The glitz and glamour of high fashion came into full glare as several talented up-and-coming African fashion designers showcased their creativity and unique sense of fashion.

There were three separate fashion shows at various venues in Accra. These runway shows sparkled with style, elegance, and some eccentrics as world-class models from Exopa Model Agency showcased the amazing ready-to-wear couture from Ghanaian designers such as Ama-Nua Williams, Patrick of House Eccentric and Clara Lawson. Nigeria's 2004 Fashion Designer of the year winner, Adebayo Adegbe of Modela Couture literally dazzled audiences with his uniquely golden collections. His love for shimmering material reflected in his collection. Kumi Bespoke also proved that he wasn't a protégée of ace Ghanaian/British designer, Ozwald Boateng for nothing. He showcased a highly impressive range of men suits tailored to suit the desire of any man who knows his fashion. Allan David, Titi Ademola, Gille Toure,

Eloi Sessou, Ousmane, Armstrong Loga, Dady Mwitaly and Christabel Mensah also showcased some terrific designs of their own.

According to Sima Ibrahim, CEO of Exopa Model Agency, the purpose of the Fashion Week was to bring talented African designers closer for exploration of ideas, and creating a network amongst African designers. The fashion week featured fashion designers from Togo, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon and Nigeria.

Day 1 of the fashion week saw and impressive introductory catwalk in the studios of TV3 which was broadcast live on that TV station. The participating designers showcased a few of the collections for the fashion week. 2008 Ghana Music Award artist of the year, Kwaw Kesse stunned his fans with unconventional walk on the runway as 'Ghana's Next Top Model'. LOL! He later got into his usual element when he performed a medley of his hits against the booming beat-box of Exdoe. This was followed on Day 2 by a magnificent runway show featuring designers' looks modelled by Exopa models at the poolside of the Holiday Inn Hotel. The show was spiced up with performances from 5five however the fun was interrupted by heavy rains. But the rain couldn't hold the fashion week back, the show continued on Day 3 as the fashion train moved over to the Exopa Burg, an ultra modern facility built by Exopa for training models.

The fashion week was also stringed with several exciting after parties and it was sealed off with a keenly contested football tournament between Exopa models and sponsors of the Fasion Week
