Everyone loves the founder story. Fewer people talk about what it actually costs to be one, especially when you're the only one.
Emmanuel Citizen Asare, known publicly as Emma Citizen, runs Emcita as a solo founder. That means on any given day he's the strategist deciding what the company builds next, the developer actually building it, and the salesperson convincing someone to pay for it. There's no co-founder to hand off the parts he's worse at. There's no team to absorb the hours he doesn't have.
It's a structure most business advice warns against. And yet it's how a Ghanaian technology entrepreneur built a company running 17 service lines, served 120+ clients across several global regions, and kept client satisfaction at 98%, all while personally carrying the weight that usually gets split three or four ways.
Emma Citizen's answer to why he still works this way isn't complicated: curiosity doesn't wait for the org chart to catch up. "Form follows curiosity," he says, and it shows in how Emcita operates. He goes where the interesting problem is, builds toward it, and figures out the structure later, whether that's a new service line, a platform like Citovex built for Ghanaian service businesses, or the next piece of infrastructure the market hasn't noticed it's missing yet.
The solo founder path is harder. Emma Citizen would probably be the first to say so. It's also, so far, the one that's worked.
