In 2026, Ghana's education system is transitioning to a new curriculum for Senior High Schools (SHS) focused on STEM and 21st-century skills, following the 2024 BECE, while reverting to traditional academic calendars for basic schools. Key updates include increased TVET enrollment, the cancellation of teacher licensure exams, and a focus on teacher promotions.

Key 2026 Updates in Ghana Education

  • Curriculum Reforms: Following the 2024 BECE, a new, learner-centered curriculum emphasizing STEM and 21st-century skills is being rolled out for Senior High Schools (SHS1-3).
  • Academic Calendar: The Ghana Education Service (GES) is reverting to the traditional academic calendar, starting in the 2025/2026 academic year.
  • Teacher Policies: The teacher licensure examination, previously taken months after completion, has been cancelled. Over 30,000 diploma teachers have been upgraded on the salary scale, and teachers are now eligible for promotion to director rank.
  • TVET Focus: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) enrollment is growing, with a target of 190,000 students, aiming for a 55% female enrollment by 2026.
  • Support & Welfare: A "No Fee Stress" policy with GH¢300 million funding supports SHS graduates entering tertiary institutions. A free sanitary pad initiative has been launched to reduce absenteeism among girls.
  • Sector Challenges: Despite improvements, challenges in infrastructure and the need to complete stalled "E-Block" projects remain a focus.
