LOVE OVER RANK: How Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie Left the Ghana Prisons Service to Marry His True Love

LOVE OVER RANK: How Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie Left the Ghana Prisons Service to Marry His True Love

In an inspiring story of love and principle, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, a respected member of Ghana’s Supreme Court, once made a life-changing decision that showed the depth of his devotion to his now-wife, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), the current Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was enlisted into the Ghana Prisons Service in 1988 as a Deputy Superintendent of Prisons. At the time, a young and promising officer, he served diligently within the ranks of the Service. Among his colleagues was a junior officer, then Second Class Officer Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, stationed at the Sekondi Central Prison.

Their paths crossed, and a friendship blossomed into love. However, their union faced a major obstacle the Service’s strict code of conduct and ethical regulations prohibited senior officers from marrying within the junior officer corps. Such relationships were considered breaches of professional ethics.

Faced with this dilemma, the young Deputy Superintendent had a choice to make , his promising career or the woman he loved.

In a bold and selfless act, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie chose love over rank. In 1990, he voluntarily resigned from the Ghana Prisons Service to marry Patience, defying convention but upholding integrity by respecting the rules of the Service.

Today, that decision stands as a testament to personal conviction and the enduring power of love. Decades later, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie has risen through the ranks to become the Director-General of Prisons, while her husband, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, serves with distinction as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Their journey reflects not only a story of love and sacrifice but also of commitment, discipline, and destiny proving that sometimes, love truly conquers all.
