A domestic violence victim who was attacked in her hotel room after Travelodge reception staff gave a key to her abuser, said she was “failed” by the chain. The woman is one of multiple people who contacted BBC Breakfast after the sentencing of Kyran Smith earlier this year, who sexually assaulted a woman in her hotel bed after Travelodge staff also have him a key card and her room number in 2022. Travelodge said while incidents like this were "very rare", customer safety and security is, and remains, a priority with staff undergoing recent training. Following Smyth's sentencing, Travelodge said there had been “immediate changes to our room access security policy to ensure that any additional or replacement room keys are only issued with explicit permission from the person (or people) staying in the room”.
