The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its Amasaman Communications Officer, Daniel Nortey, from all media appearances and public engagements on behalf of the party until further notice over his remarks on the alleged sexual abuse of students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
The suspension follows public backlash over comments Mr Nortey made during a televised discussion on the case involving the school’s headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, which many criticised as downplaying the impact of rape on victims.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, the NDC’s National Communication Bureau condemned the remarks and reiterated its position against sexual abuse and exploitation, particularly where children are concerned.
“The Party reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on sexual abuse and all forms of sexual exploitation, particularly where the safety, dignity and welfare of children are concerned,” the statement read in part.
The party also acknowledged Mr Nortey’s unreserved apology but stressed that public discussions of sexual abuse allegations must be handled with sensitivity and respect for due process.
It said the decision to suspend him was intended to underscore the need for responsible public commentary on sensitive matters and prevent such issues from being reduced to partisan exchanges.
“Consequently, the Communication Directorate has suspended Mr. Daniel Nortey from all media appearances and public engagements in the name of the Party, with immediate effect and until further notice,” the statement added.
The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting women and children and ensuring accountability, stressing that allegations of sexual abuse must be treated seriously and handled in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the party has also stated that it will not shield the embattled headmaster, who used to be its Juaben Constituency Secretary, in the ongoing criminal investigations regarding the matter
