ALJA National President Honored In US

The National President of the Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA), Moses D. Sandy, is one of several eminent recipients of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the United Bassa Organizations in the Americas’ (UNIBOA) 2018 Outstanding and Dedicated Community Service Awards.

Mr. Sandy was recognized, hailed and honored for exceptional leadership and community service to Liberians in the United States. According to an ALJA press release issued on December 24, 2018, the honoring ceremony was held on Saturday, December 22, 2018, in Yeadon Township, Pennsylvania. It formed part of the Chapter’s inaugural program and annual Christmas party. UNIBOA is one of the biggest US based Liberian community organizations. It was founded on April 13, 1991, in Trenton, New Jersey. UNIBOA brings together Bassa speaking people residing in the Americas, USA and Canada with origins from Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Margibi, and Montserrado Counties. The Organization is fixated on upholding the Bassa heritage.

Receiving the award, the ALJA National President thanked the organization for the honor bestowed on him and his family. He vowed to keep up the good work. Mr. Sandy is a career journalist and social worker. He has extensive community advocacy and work experience. He is former Editor-in-Chief of the state owned Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS). He relocated to the US in the year 2000 and currently resides with his family in New Castle, Delaware. He is former chairman of the Delaware Liberian Community. Also, he is Team Manager-emeritus of the First State old Timers Sports Association located in Delaware.

In 2014, he was among a group of dedicated US based Liberian journalists that resuscitated ALJA after 10 years of dormancy. Mr. Sandy chaired the reactivation committee. ALJA is a conglomeration of current and retired Liberian journalists residing in the Americas. The Association was founded in 1998 in Washington, D.C. but crumbled in the year 2004 as a result internal rift amongst its members. ALJA seeks to foster companionship amongst its members and advance the causes of press freedom and good governance in Liberia. As a result of Mr. Sandy and his colleagues’ outstanding work, ALJA is now a vivacious organization in the Americas with a steady growth in membership.
