WiLDAF Ghana Calls On Delegates Of NPP To Vote For Female Candidates At The Upcoming National Delegates Conference

Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF Ghana) commends the NPP for following due democratic process during its 25 years as a Political Party in the selection of its National and Constituency Executives. WiLDAF Ghana congratulates you on such an achievement.

WiLDAF Ghana also commends the NPP for its attempts in the past to get more women into political decision making structures by introducing some Affirmative Action measures; although this received substantial backlash from some members of the party.

Considering that the NPP’s current Manifesto provides for 30% minimum representation in public and political offices WiLDAF Ghana calls on the delegates to make a firm statement on the party’s commitment by voting massively for women who have put themselves up as candidates for various positions.

Again, a vote for women will strengthen the President’s efforts as the African Union Champion for Gender Equality, the Co-Chair of the Sustainable Development Goals and a HeForShe Champion. This is a call to action and we are hopeful this will be achieved.

Specifically WiLDAF calls on the delegates to vote for all the women contesting the following positions:

Vice-Chairperson Positions:
We urge all delegates to vote for all the three women contesting the Vice-Chairpersons positions.

The three women contesting these positions are:

  1. Rita Talata Asobayire,
  2. Agnes A. Chigabatia, and
  3. Vida Agyekum Acheampong.

A vote for all three will ensure some level of balance of representation of women and men at the top echelons of the National Executive Positions of the NPP. As things stand now, the NPP is fielding only male candidates for the positions of Chairperson, General Secretary and National Organiser; and these are the topmost executive positions available within the party’s governance structures.

National Treasurer Position:
WiLDAF Ghana further calls on the delegates to consider the two female candidates and vote for the better of the two. The two female candidates contesting the National Treasurer position are:

  1. Mary Posch-Oduro, and
  2. Hajia Ruka Ahmed

National Women’s Organizer Position:
Since only females are contesting this position, WiLDAF Ghana calls on the delegates to cast their votes for the candidate who is capable of advancing the NPP’s Gender Equality Agenda. The women contesting this position are:

  1. Kate Gyamfua, and
  2. Joyce Konokie Tempare

Finally, we challenge the media to play its watchdog role effectively through positive, objective reporting on women candidates. We also urge the media to embark on an objective reportage of events preceding, during and after the National Delegates Conference. They should encourage constructive phone-in and interviews on the Elections.
