Controversy in insurance industry over appointment of new commissioner

A ripple of protest is gradually sweeping through the insurance industry over the appointment of a new commissioner.

JOY BUSINESS has gathered that President Mahama has appointed Madam Lydia Bawa, a Chief Manager with SIC Insurance as the new insurance commissioner. This appears not to have gone done well with especially most of the industry top-guns who have been have been expressing strong sentiments against the move.

They argue that the Acting Commissioner, Simon Nero Davor who is generally acclaimed to have performed well so far should have been confirmed or at least a much more experienced practitioner and top manager appointed.

According to them, the appointment is an affront to corporate hierarchy because Madam Bawa is a Chief Manager which is about 3 steps away from a Managing Director position on the corporate ladder.

Madam Bawa is SIC's area manager of Kumasi and holds an MBA degree in finance from the University of Ghana as well as a Diploma from the West Africa Insurance Institute. She is also a Chartered Insurer (Chartered Institute of Insurance UK) and also a lawyer called to the Ghana Bar in 1995.

She recently participated in SIC's Managing Director recruitment interview but lost to Doris Nkani who is now the M.D and Kwei-Mensah Ashidam who is also now the Deputy Managing Director (Technical).
