More students benefit from MEST project

Government in its bid to promote and enhance the study of Science and Technology has in collaboration with RLG Communication presented Laptops to some students in Accra.

The Minister of Environment Science and Technology, Sherry Aryitey, who made the presentation, advised the beneficiaries to use the laptops to broaden their knowledge.

She noted that the initiative was part of government's commitment to encourage the teaching and learning of ICT.

The Ministry of Environment Science and Technology (MEST) has released the second batch of 546 laptops for distribution to individuals, state and educational institutions in the country, under the Better Ghana Agenda.

The MEST has taken delivery of 456 laptop computers from RLG Communications.

Under the programme initiated in 2011, rlg Communications is to produce 9,000 locally made laptops, with about 6,220 laptops already distributed to various Universities, Polytechnics and individuals across the country.

The Minister for the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, said Government was committed to enhancing the learning abilities of students, especially in the study of science and technology in schools, therefore, the presentation is to achieve that objective.

The distribution of the laptops, which formed part of the Mathematics, Science and Technology Scholarship (MASTES) programme under the Ministry, was initiated in 2011 and is aimed at enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics in the various tertiary institutions.

While the Ministry is responsible for the selection of beneficiaries, rlg Communications is responsible for the production of the laptops. About 6,220 computers have so far been distributed to various Universities and Polytechnics, out of the 9,000 earmarked for distribution.

Some of the beneficiaries of the project were full of praise and appreciation to the government and rlg for the initiative. They also promised to put the laptops to good use to promote the vision of the project.
