Ghana Post Increases Service Rates

From February 7, all inland letters weighing up to 20 grammes will cost ¢4,000, up from the current ¢2,000. Any additional 10 grams will attract a further ¢2,000, Ghana Post said on Wednesday, announcing new rates for its services.



The increase, however, does not affect letter box fees.

The cost of airmail letters to African countries has been adjusted from ¢4,000 to ¢7,300, while that to Europe has been increased from ¢4,500 to ¢7,500.

The same weight of airmail letters to the Americas and Far East has also had a corresponding increase.

Letters to the Americas will now cost ¢9,000 instead of ¢5,000, while those going to the Far East now cost ¢10,000 from ¢6,000 currently.

Speaking to the Times, the Managing Director of Ghana Post, Kofi Dua-Adonteng, said the increases are with the approval of the Postal and Courier Regulatory Commission aimed at meeting the high operational costs and improve quality of services.

'It will also support the company to effectively and efficiently meet the universal service obligation as a national operator', he added.

Since 2003, Mr Dua-Adonteng noted, there have not been any increases in postal rates and charges, a situation which is seriously affecting Ghana Post's operations.

Handling charges for packets and parcels have been adjusted from ¢10,000 to ¢15,000 and ¢20,000 respectively.

Similar increases have been put on printed matter, registered letters, newspaper registration and other supplementary services.
