We’re mere mortals; it’s needless to criticise us to dampen our spirits — Obaapa Christy defends gospel artistes

Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician, Obaapa Christy, formerly known as Christiana Twene, has called on Ghanaians to offer prayers and support and not criticise gospel musicians who face challenges.

Obaapa Christy noted that gospel artistes are not angels simply because they convey the word of God through their music.

She reminded the public that gospel musicians are mere mortals, and like any other humans, they are prone to making mistakes.

During an interview with the media, the music diva stressed the need for understanding and empathy rather than harsh criticism when gospel artists go astray.

She expressed concern about the negative comments and disheartening remarks directed at gospel musicians during challenging times.

"Inasmuch as we are gospel musicians, we are mere mortals and we are bound to make mistakes too.

“Some media persons and Ghanaians dwell on the negatives instead of focusing on the positives. What is the point in rejoicing over someone’s downfall?” Obaapa Christy questioned.

Taking the opportunity to advise her colleagues in the gospel music industry, the 'Hyebre Sesafo' hitmaker urged fellow artists to place value on themselves.

She emphasised the importance of fair compensation, encouraging gospel musicians to seek remuneration similar to their secular counterparts who reportedly sign better deals with event organisers.
