C. K. Akunnor Wants Transition In Black Stars To Be Gradual
Former Black Stars captain, Charles Akunnor is of the view that the transition in the national team should be a gradual progress and has cautioned to not to retire call for early retirement for some players.
The former Dreams FC head coach said he is impressed by the new players coming into the team and very excited to the level of competition.
After the team’s impressive performance against Congo, Uganda, and Saudi Arabia without the inclusion of the Ayew brothers, many Ghanaian football endeavors has called on the head coach of the team, Kwesi Appiah not to invite the Ayew brothers back to the Black Stars but Akunnor says transition should be gradual and not amid at retiring players.
“You can’t use that match to justify the calls for massive retirement of the players from the team, I’m not a fan of such idea. We have to take it slowly and gradually and I’m sure the players themselves know, I was once the Captain of the team but now I’m not, and so time will tell” he told Happy FM.
“To say that we should sack all of them because they did this and that, no. All these are good players and at any given time if we ask them to come and play, they will,” he added.
“The match we played in Congo showed there are some good plays who are getting in gradually, it showed in our last two games and gradually as we keep going we are getting them into the team but to ask for the complete overhaul of the squad, no, I’m not a fan of that,” he concluded.
The Black Stars failed to qualify for the World Cup after a goalless draw in Kampala against Uganda but they beat Saudi Arabia three days later in an International friendly.
Kwesi Appiah fielded a new look team, in line with his aim of building a new and competitive team.
