Disagreement over choice of captain caused us 1992 AFCON title - Damba
Ex Ghana goalkeeper Abubakari Damba has revealed, a disagreement over the choice of captain by the Black Stars players resulted in their inability to win the 1992 AFCON Final against Ivory Coast in Senegal.
Ghana lost the final 11-10 on penalty shoot-outs after a goalless scoreline in regulation time.
According to Damba, the choice of Tony Baffoe to replace the then suspended captain Abedi Pele, was not taken well by some senior members of the team thus their lackluster attitude towards the game.
“Abedi Pele could not play in the finals and this question of who was going to captain [the team] became a big issue ahead of that game,” he told Joy Sports Editor Nathaniel Attoh.
“We had players like Anthony Yeboah who was also one of the oldest players in the team, Frimpong Manso was also there but the captain's armband was given to Tony Baffoe and that became a big issue.
“Players frowned seriously and as a result of that they played less than 50 percent of their performance.”
