King Khan Defends Title In US

Amir Khan

World boxing champion Amir Khan's assault on America continues this weekend when the Briton defends his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles against slick American Lamont Peterson in Washington.

The fight will be broadcast live on SuperSport 7 on 11th December from 4.30am.

This will be Khan's fourth contest in the US, and the sixth defence of his WBA title. It is also the first defence of the IBF world title he won in July in a unification fight with Zab Judah.

A stablemate of Manny Pacquiao, Khan is building towards a fight in 2012 against Floyd Mayweather jnr.

However, he must first get past Peterson, a former street urchin who has mixed near the top level without meeting any of the superstars in a 29-1-1 career.

'Amir has done well in America, I will give him that,' said Peterson. 'But he's never met a hungry American like me, a fighter that had nothing and will never quit.'

But Khan is a fighter on the rise. Just 24, he is destined for great things, according to Oscar De La Hoya.

'Amir's up there in pound-for-pound terms. You can make that argument for him to become the best fighter in the world. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are on top at the moment, but Amir is right on their backs.

With time, he can catch them. In every single fight, we have seen him get better. He can become the best.'
