President confers honors on teams
President John Evans Atta Mills today praised the national football teams for their dedicated services to the country as he conferred State Honors on members of the teams.
Members of the Black Stars and the Black Satellites were decorated with awards for their performances in two separate world competitions.
The President said their services are worth emulating.
“I am particularly happy that, especially at this important time in our history, we are able to showcase people whose examples and whose contributions have propelled our country forward and are therefore sources of inspiration to all of us,” the President said.
Players of the Black Stars, who reached the quarter finals in 2010 World Cup received the Companion of the Order of the Volta.
The other honorees were the technical and management teams of the Black Stars, who took the Grand Medal.
Ghana's Under-20 World Cup winning team, the Black Satellites and their head coach Sellas Tetteh were awarded Member of the Order of the Volta.
The technical and management teams were conferred with the Grand Medal.
Ghana in 2009 became the first team from the continent to win the Fifa U-20 World Cup when the Black Satellites lifted the title in Egypt.
Former national player and coach John Eshun was honoured with a Grand Medal.
