New Winners At Cal Bank Golf Tourney

This year's tiGo open women's champion, Beatrice Vetch-Bempong, dropped her guard to slump to second position at the 7th CAL Bank Invitational golf competition at the Country Golf Course while ex-Black Stars striker now turned golfer, Tony Yeboah, exhibited some precision on the 'greens' in the putting segment.

Toney 'Yegolfer' as the ex-player is fondly called by his fellow golfers, and Chris Apau-Opong ( Tiger), were the only two to find the hole in the putting competition out of 24 and shared GHc500 prize money presented by the sponsors, CAL bank.

But the two were completely out played in the main stableford competition which featured some crack golfers across the country producing two new winners in both the male and female divisions.

Cherie Hammond stopped Vetch Bempong's recent unbeaten ran while P. K. Amenyo took advantage of some floppy play by some of the big names in the male division including Oswald Amuzu and Akwasi Poku to win the competition. Hammond scored 37 stableford point to beat Vetch Bempong who netted 36 while young Jessica Tei was third on 35.

Amenyo won the men's category on countback ahead of N. Hammond and K. Boakye after all had scored 37 stableford points.

The longest drive was won by K. Kronzu and Vivian Kwame respectively while the closest to the pin went to the MD of CAL Bank Frank Adu Jnr and Esther Amoah in the men and female categories.

Mr Adu called for sixth months suspension for any golfer caught cheating since the menace was gradually affecting attendance at competitions.

He said the Ghana Golf Association needed to put in place stringent measures to win back the confidence of golfers some of whom have vowed not to return to the course as a result of the development.
