April 30, 2011
Sekondi, April 30, GNA - The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has received a poverty indicator map from the Cooperative Housing Foundation International (CHF) to identify and assess poverty endemic areas towards improving their living conditions.

The poverty indicator map would also help in defining the various dimension of poverty with regards to demography, housing, solid waste water and income generation using the 2000 Population and Housing Census Data.

Mr Ishmeal Adams, Project Director at the CHF, noted that the map would further identify and analyze the characteristics of poverty at the community level within the STMA to aid in proper resource allocations as a means of alleviating poverty in the metropolis.

He said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly had already been presented with a similar map to assist in making Accra the much talked about millennium city.

Mr Adams indicated that the poverty maps had been designed to help policy makers and city managers to identify areas in cities that had greater number of people and the highest poverty rate adding, "It also aims at identifying pockets of poverty across Sekondi and Takoradi, including defects in service provision and the state of the poor in deprived communities".

Captain Retired Anthony Cudjoe, the Metropolitan Chief Executive who received the maps expressed optimism that it would provide comprehensive and detailed information for planning and urban renewal.
