Zamalek table Akwetey offer

Zamalek want to sign Akwe Mensah

Zamalek have tabled a bid for Lierse's Ghanaian midfielder Akwetey Mensah and Mohamed Al-Gabbas, the Cairo club said on Wednesday.

Mensah, who also played under Hassan at Masri, is tracked by Zamalek to solve their persistent midfield problems.

"Upon the request of coach Hossam Hassan, we made an offer to sign both players in January," Zamalek board member Ahmed Galal told FilGoal.com.

"Lierse are likely to reply to the offer in the coming few days."

Egyptian striker Al-Gabbas put in some fine displays with the Belgian second-division club, who are owned by Egyptian businessman Maged Sami, after joining from Masri in the close season.

The 22-year-old, who played in Egypt's World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in September for his first ever appearance with the national team, scored eight goals with Lierse this season.

Zamalek boast six strikers, including Amr Zaki and Mido, but none of them impressed in the first half of the season.

The White Knights, who moved up to fifth in the league table after Hassan took over from Henri Michel, struggled to fill in for midfielder Tamer Abdul-Hamid following his departure in the summer of 2008.
