African capital market leaders rewarded at the 2009 Africa investor Index Series Awards at the New York Stock Exchange
New York, London, Johannesburg, 22 September 2009: Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment research and communication group and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the world's largest exchange, last night announced winners for the 2009 Africa investor Index Series Awards to the global investment community at the NYSE.
Three winners were presented for each category with a first place winner, first runner-up and second runner-up. The Africa investor Series Awards assess performance between April 2008 and April 2009. The Awards are based on the Ai100 and Ai40 indices and are the only international, pan-African awards that recognise and reward institutional investors, stock exchanges, stockbrokers and capital market regulators across the continent.
The Awards were opened by His Excellency Raila Odinga, Prime Minister of Kenya who commended Africa investor for its initiative that showcased African investment leaders and opportunities to the world.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange received the award for Most Innovative African Stock Exchange, with a particular mention of their innovative Africa Board initiative. Best Performing Ai40 Company went to Maroc Telecom while Co-operative Bank of Kenya led the way winning Best African IPO. The Capital Market Authority of Egypt took gold, winning the Most Innovative Capital Markets Regulator and Standard Bank Group took both the Best Africa Investment Bank and Best Africa Research Team Awards.
Commenting on the Awards process, Hubert Danso, Vice Chairman of Africa investor, also part of the judging panel, said: “Congratulations to the winners and all those institutions that submitted their entries and took the initiative to participate in this important process. The Awards record performance from April 2008 to 2009, which represents one of the most challenging investment periods in economic history. These Awards go a long way to highlighting the enormous potential and opportunities offered by Africa's capital markets.”
Kenyan and South African business leaders dominated the CEO categories with James Mwangi scooping the Ai100 CEO of the Year and Jacko Maree the Ai40 CEO of the year. Hussein Manzi, CEO, Bamburi Cement in Kenya won the AiSRI50 CEO of the Year award and South Africa's Phuthuma Nhleko, CEO, MTN Group awarded the AiSRI30 CEO of the Year.
Standard Bank won several Awards, including for Best Investment Research Team and its US-based representative Mark Chiaviello, Director of Corporate & Investment Banking, to the Index Series Awards said “Standard Bank Group strives to be the leading financial services institution in Africa and it's delightful to be recognised by such a prestigious group such as Africa investor
on these numerous awards that we have received at the NYSE, which is the capital of global markets of the world.”
The Africa investor Awards ceremony was attended by over 200 senior executives from across Africa and the rest of the world. Dignitaries present included CEOs of the Nigerian, Mauritian, Egyptian, Casablanca and Ghanaian Stock Exchanges, as well as leading financial institutions such as the African Development Bank, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), Afrexim Bank, Bank of New York Mellon and Scipion Capital.
Dr Tukur, Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group and Africa investor remarked during the Awards that “Regarded as Africa's Fortune 500, these awards are a tribute not only to those nominated or the winners, but all the actors in Africa's capital markets community enabling us to have remarkable success stories to showcase to the world.”
The 2009 Africa investor Index Series Awards, which will be showcased in the November-December issue of Africa investor magazine (published in English and Chinese) were supported by NYSE Euronext, Thomson Reuters, the African Development Bank, CNN International, the NEPAD Business Group and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
