Carlos Queiroz left Ghana job over poor results, says GFA Communications Director

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says Carlos Queiroz decided to leave his position as Black Stars head coach because of the team's poor results.

The Portuguese coach was appointed on a short-term contract to replace Otto Addo ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the tournament in North America, marking the Black Stars' first appearance in the last 16 since the 2010 World Cup.

Following the tournament, the GFA retained the veteran coach to lead the team into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

However, Ghana's disappointing start to the qualifying campaign led to the two parties parting ways.

According to Asante Twum, Queiroz acknowledged the team's poor results and opted to step down.

“Carlos Queiroz admits that the results have not been great, and he has decided to move on,” he told Kessben FM.

Queiroz's seven-match spell in charge ended with one win, two draws and four defeats.

Ghana lost their opening two AFCON qualifying matches against Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving them bottom of Group C without a point.

A five-member committee has now been tasked with finding Queiroz's replacement, with its report and recommendation expected to be submitted to the Sports Ministry on 9 October.

The Black Stars are due to face Somalia twice in November at the Accra Sports Stadium as they look to revive their qualifying campaign and avoid missing a second successive AFCON tournament.
