BREAKING NEWS: Carlos Queiroz to stay on as Black Stars coach after new GFA agreement
Carlos Queiroz will remain in charge of Ghana's national team after reaching an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to continue as head coach of the Black Stars.
The announcement ends months of uncertainty surrounding the future of the 73-year-old Portuguese coach, whose initial four-month contract expired last month following Ghana's campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz was appointed in April after the dismissal of Otto Addo, who left the role following a disappointing run of results. The former Portugal assistant, Egypt and Colombia coach was tasked with leading Ghana at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Under his guidance, the Black Stars reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Ghana began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before earning a goalless draw against England. A narrow 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match left them third in the standings, but they progressed to the Round of 32, where they were eliminated following a 1-0 loss to Colombia.
Despite widespread reports suggesting negotiations had stalled over contractual demands, the GFA confirmed on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached with the experienced coach.
"The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team's programme," the association said in a statement.
"Queiroz's previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window.
"The GFA believes Queiroz's extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter."
The governing body added that details of the new agreement and the team's upcoming schedule would be communicated in due course.
Queiroz's first assignment under his new mandate will be the start of Ghana's qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars travel to Bouaké to face Côte d'Ivoire on 24 September at the Stade de la Paix before returning home three days later to host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Four-time African champions Ghana will be aiming to secure a place at the continental finals after missing out on qualification for the previous edition in Morocco, a setback that remains one of the country's biggest football disappointments in recent years.
