Accra Inter-City Marathon sets October date with GH¢100,000 prize fund

The fourth edition of the Tampico Accra Inter-City Marathon has been launched in Accra, with organisers announcing a GH¢100,000 prize pool and an expected field of more than 2,000 runners for this year's event.

The launch ceremony was held at the Zimansky Hotel in Roman Ridge, where officials said the marathon would take place on 10 October, starting and finishing at the Trust Sports Emporium, also known as the Bukom Boxing Arena.

National Sports Authority Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah praised the organisers and sponsors for sustaining the event, saying it contributes to efforts to strengthen sport in Ghana. He also encouraged young people to take part, highlighting the health and social benefits of participation.

The marathon will feature a 21km race for elite athletes alongside a 5km race open to the public, with para-athletes and skaters also competing.

Race Director William Ezah said the GH¢100,000 prize fund would be shared among top-performing runners, skaters and wheelchair athletes.

He added that organisers had put safety measures in place, including security personnel and ambulance services throughout the race route.

"We expect about 2,000 runners and 200 stakeholders, plus wheelchair para-athletes, to create massive excitement," Ezah said.

Tampico representative Louis Morton reaffirmed the company's support for the event and proposed that 10 October become recognised as "Tampico Marathon Day".

Henry Senyo Penni, General Manager of Medivents Consult, said the event had grown beyond a sporting competition, describing it as a platform for promoting tourism, culture and business networking.

Ghana Athletics Chief Executive Ahmed Baffoe said the marathon had the potential to earn recognition from World Athletics, adding that electronic timing chips embedded in runners' bibs would provide accurate race times and distance tracking.

Former Ghanaian para-athlete Botsyo Nkegbe welcomed the continued inclusion of para-athletes, saying it provided greater opportunities for athletes with disabilities to compete.

MYST Water, one of the event's partners, said it was supporting the race by providing hydration for participants, while Capelli Sport said it would supply internationally recognised sporting equipment.

Registration for the marathon remains open, with interested participants able to sign up by dialling *380*21#.

The 2026 Tampico Accra Inter-City Marathon is supported by MYST Water, MAPHLIX, GWO SEVO, SOCCA BOX, Ethiopian Airlines, Capelli Sport and Zimansky Hotel.
