Ghana Premier League credibility concerns hurting sponsorship, says George Afriyie
Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie says concerns over the credibility of the Ghana Premier League are making it difficult for the competition to attract major sponsors.
Mr Afriyie believes perceptions that matches and results can be manipulated have undermined confidence in the league and discouraged companies from investing.
"The struggle to attract sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League is because many people see the competition as being manipulated," he told Sporty FM.
"When a league lacks credibility, which company would want to invest in it?" he added.
His comments come ahead of the start of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, which is scheduled to begin on 5 September.
The league is one of Ghana's biggest sporting competitions, but questions over its commercial appeal and financial sustainability have remained a concern in recent years.
Sponsorship plays an important role in the development of the competition, with clubs relying on commercial partnerships alongside gate receipts, broadcast revenue and other income streams.
Concerns about match officiating, governance and the integrity of the competition have also fuelled debate among supporters and football stakeholders.
Mr Afriyie argues that improving the league's commercial prospects will require more than simply promoting the competition to potential investors.
He says restoring public confidence and ensuring the league is seen as credible and transparent are essential to attracting significant corporate investment.
