Black Satellites will need better preparation to win U-20 AFCON next year, says Maxwell Konadu after WAFU B elimination
Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has stressed the need for a comprehensive preparation programme ahead of next year's U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following Ghana's disappointing exit from the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Ivory Coast.
Ghana's campaign ended at the group stage after the team managed just two points from three matches. The Black Satellites began the tournament with a defeat to Nigeria before recording consecutive draws against Burkina Faso and Togo.
Needing a victory against Togo to progress to the knockout stage, the Black Satellites were held to a goalless draw at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Sunday, ending their hopes of advancing.
Despite the early elimination, attention has already turned to the U-20 AFCON, which Ghana is set to host next year as part of activities marking the country's 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
Speaking after the match, Konadu praised the commitment of his players but admitted the team's overall display fell short of expectations.
"We are happy with the team, but not entirely satisfied with the overall performance. Before this tournament, we talked about the lack of international matches, but we still believed in the boys and encouraged them to give their best. For me, they gave everything," he added.
The former Asante Kotoko coach believes the tournament provided valuable insight into the abilities of his squad, helping the technical team identify players who are ready to compete at the highest level.
"It is good that we have seen what they can do. Some couldn't make the mark, while others showed they have what it takes. Now we have to prepare very well because without proper preparation you cannot win tournaments. We had enough time to train, but I think exposure made the difference," Konadu added.
The experienced tactician maintained that regular international matches and a well-structured training programme will be essential if the Black Satellites are to challenge for continental honours when they host Africa's best U-20 teams next year.
