2026 Commonwealth Games: Ghana Boxer Desmond Pappoe announces withdrawal due to shoulder injury
Team Ghana boxer Desmond Pappoe has been forced to withdraw from the boxing competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after sustaining a shoulder injury, the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana (CGA Ghana) has announced.
The injury ends Pappoe's campaign just before his scheduled quarter-final contest, bringing a premature close to what had been a promising run at the Games.
According to CGA Ghana, the decision was made after the boxer underwent a thorough medical examination by Team Ghana's medical staff, who determined that he was medically unfit to continue competing.
Following consultations between the medical team, coaching staff and Games officials, it was agreed that withdrawing Pappoe from the tournament was the best course of action, with his health and long-term recovery taking precedence over competition.
The Association described the development as a significant disappointment for both the athlete and Team Ghana, highlighting that Pappoe had shown excellent form and was eager to compete for a place in the semi-finals.
In an official statement, CGA Ghana praised the boxer's commitment and determination throughout his qualification journey and preparations for the Commonwealth Games, assuring him of its full support during his recovery.
The Association also expressed confidence that Pappoe would recover fully and return to the ring stronger, with the potential to represent Ghana in future international competitions.
