Joseph Opoku targets Swansea City success after sealing move from Zulte Waregem
Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku has expressed his desire to continue the proud tradition of Ghanaian players at Swansea City after completing his move to the English Championship club from Belgian Pro League side Zulte Waregem.
The 20-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Welsh outfit, with the agreement including an option for an additional 12 months.
Opoku, a product of Ghanaian club Great Corinthians FC, moved to Belgium in 2024 to join Jong Essevee before earning promotion into Zulte Waregem’s senior setup.
The talented winger enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 campaign, making 34 league appearances and contributing 10 goals and six assists as he played a key role in the Belgian club’s success.
His impressive form also earned him his first senior appearance for the Ghana national team in May 2026.
Following his arrival at Swansea City, Opoku revealed his excitement about joining a club with a strong connection to Ghana, particularly through former Black Stars captains Andre and Jordan Ayew.
"I'm excited to be here," said Opoku.
"The first training session was good. It suits my class.
"Andre and Jordan Ayew did great things here; I think they are legends in Ghana and they have both captained the Ghana national team. I hope I can play well in Swansea to keep the Ghana name high."
The youngster described the transfer as a special milestone for himself and his family, while outlining the qualities he hopes to bring to the team.
"It's such a special moment for me and my family. You play football for these moments, so I was so excited. I think I’m strong, powerful, a goalscorer and can get a lot of assists."
Opoku acknowledged the challenge ahead but believes the move represents the next step in his development as he looks to make a significant impact in England.
"I think as a player you have to challenge yourself. I think it will be tough, but we will find a way as a team," he said.
"I hope to get a lot of goals and assists. I think I can help the team, and I think the team can help me to get the best out of myself this season."
The winger now becomes the latest Ghanaian to represent Swansea City, following in the footsteps of the Ayew brothers who became influential figures at the club during their time in South Wales.
