Black Stars: Alexander Djiku declares fitness after injury setback ahead of 2026 World Cup
Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has revealed that he is fully recovered from injury and is eager to make his return to the national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers later this year.
The experienced centre-back missed Ghana's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after arriving in camp with what was initially described as a minor injury.
However, further medical assessment confirmed that he would be unable to recover in time for the tournament, forcing him to miss football's biggest stage.
Djiku's withdrawal was a significant blow to the Black Stars, with Derrick Luckassen drafted into the squad as his replacement for the tournament in North America.
Now back to full fitness, the defender says he feels strong and remains determined to continue contributing to the national team while helping the next generation of players.
"I don't know, I try to give the best of myself and show them what I can do, but maybe one time I will not be like I am now, and it will be the moment to stop. But for now I feel very good; I feel happy," Djiku told the Ghana FA
The 27-year-old also stressed the importance of sharing his experience with younger players as the Black Stars continue to build for the future.
"I try to give my experience to the young people who are coming, and then we will see year by year, competition after competition," he added.
After missing the World Cup through injury, Djiku is now expected to be available for selection when Ghana begins its 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign later this year, providing a timely boost to the Black Stars' defensive options as they look to secure a place at the continental tournament.
