Championship: Tariq Lamptey explains Queens Park Rangers move after Fiorentina exit
Ghana international Tariq Lamptey has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to join English Championship side Queens Park Rangers ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 26-year-old completed his move to Loftus Road after leaving Serie A outfit Fiorentina, where his spell was cut short following an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Lamptey had joined the Italian club from Brighton & Hove Albion on a three-year contract but was forced to depart after an injury-hit campaign.
Speaking after sealing the transfer, the Black Stars defender said QPR's long-term vision and ambition convinced him to make the switch.
“I'm excited for the opportunity ahead," he said after joining the side.
“When I spoke to the gaffer and Christian (Nourry), the project was an encouraging one.
“The team have ambitious goals for this season, so I'm looking forward to it.”
Despite attracting interest from several clubs, Lamptey admitted the chance to work under newly appointed head coach Julien Stéphan played a major role in his decision.
“He's worked with some great players who've gone on to do great things in the game," he said.
“His resume speaks for itself. He's a great coach, so I'm excited to work with him and learn from him.”
The former Brighton full-back is now focused on reviving his career after a frustrating spell on the sidelines.
Having represented Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and earned 11 senior caps for the Black Stars, Lamptey believes he can return to the level that established him as one of the Premier League's most exciting young defenders.
“I know what I'm capable of and I set myself high standards," he said.
“I had a great start to my career, and I'll keep continuing that.”
Lamptey will be hoping to enjoy a successful return to regular first-team football as QPR target a strong campaign in the Championship.
