Ghana secures three UCI cycling events for 2027 international calendar
The Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) has secured a major boost for the sport after registering three international cycling events on the 2027 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) calendar.
The development is expected to enhance Ghana's profile in world cycling while providing local riders with more opportunities to compete on home soil and collect valuable UCI ranking points.
In a statement issued on 7 July, the federation announced that the Ghana National Cycling Championships will take place in June 2027, followed by the Bahati Cycling Classic in July and the Tour du Ghana in November.
The GCF described the inclusion of the three competitions on the UCI calendar as a landmark achievement for cycling in Ghana, saying it reflects the country's growing influence in the sport across the African continent.
According to the federation, hosting UCI-sanctioned races will strengthen athlete development by allowing Ghanaian cyclists to compete against international opposition without travelling abroad, while also boosting the country's standing in global cycling.
The federation added that the achievement places Ghana among West Africa's leading cycling nations, joining countries such as Burkina Faso and Benin in staging internationally recognised road cycling events.
The GCF also believes Ghana is emerging as a driving force in the growth of road cycling in English-speaking West Africa and expressed optimism that the milestone will inspire other countries in the region to organise UCI-approved competitions.
The federation credited the success to the continued support of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC), the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the National Sports Authority (NSA), sponsors, development partners and the media.
General Secretary Shaaban Mohammed reiterated the federation's ambition to expand the sport across the country, revealing that Ghana currently has 27 affiliated cycling clubs spread across 10 regions.
He added that plans are underway to establish more clubs as part of efforts to make Ghana a leading destination for international cycling events.
Meanwhile, Ghanaian cyclist Mubarak Shaaban Mohammed is preparing to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Speaking ahead of the competition, he expressed confidence in his preparations and his determination to deliver a strong performance.
"I have prepared well and I hope to perform remarkably. It will be tough, but I promise to make my country proud," he said.
