Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah set to join FC Köln as a free agent

Ghana international Gideon Mensah is set to join Bundesliga side FC Köln on a free transfer ahead of the 2026/27 season after bringing his four-year spell with French outfit AJ Auxerre to an end.

The 27-year-old left-back heads to Germany following an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign in North America, where he played every minute of Ghana's four matches as the Black Stars reached the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Colombia.

Mensah became a free agent after his contract with Auxerre expired, with both parties unable to reach an agreement over a new deal.

The defender confirmed his departure in an emotional farewell message on social media, expressing his appreciation to the club's players, coaches, staff and supporters for their unwavering support throughout his time in France.

Describing his spell at Auxerre as "a real honour," Mensah said he was leaving the club with "a heart filled with gratitude" after four memorable seasons.

The former Red Bull Salzburg defender also enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign, making 30 league appearances and contributing two assists as Auxerre successfully battled to avoid relegation.

Mensah initially joined Auxerre on loan in 2021 before completing a permanent move the following year, establishing himself as one of the club's most reliable performers.

Having successfully completed his mandatory medical examinations in Cologne on Friday, the Ghanaian is now expected to be officially unveiled by FC Köln in the coming days as they prepare for the new Bundesliga season.
