Ghana's World Cup dream ends as Colombia edge Black Stars into exit
Ghana's hopes of a deep run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup were brought to an end after a 1-0 defeat by Colombia in the Round of 32, with Jhon Arias' first-half goal proving enough to send the South Americans through.
The Black Stars made an encouraging start at the Kansas City Stadium and almost stunned Colombia inside the opening minutes. Thomas Partey tried his luck from distance with a powerful strike that drifted narrowly wide of the target.
The contest, however, was soon disrupted by injuries at both ends. Colombia were forced into an early substitution when striker Jhon Córdoba picked up a groin injury and was replaced by Luis Suárez.
Ghana suffered a similar setback moments later as right-back Marvin Senaya, who initially attempted to play through a hamstring problem, was unable to continue. Alidu Seidu came on in his place before the 15-minute mark.
The Colombian change proved decisive almost immediately.
Within minutes of his introduction, Suárez delivered an inviting cross to the far post, where the unmarked Jhon Arias guided a composed first-time finish beyond Lawrence Ati Zigi to give Colombia the lead in the 14th minute.
The goal settled Colombia, who controlled possession for much of the remainder of the first half while limiting Ghana's attacking threat.
Luis Díaz came close to extending the advantage after finding space inside the penalty area but fired wide, before Ati Zigi produced a superb save on the stroke of half-time to deny Johan Mojica's powerful header from Daniel Muñoz's delivery.
Ghana improved after the restart and fashioned their best opportunity through Antoine Semenyo, whose driving run into the box ended with a dangerous low cross flashing across goal. However, no Black Stars player was in position to convert.
Colombia continued to look dangerous on the counterattack. Díaz thought he had doubled the lead early in the second half, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. The winger was soon presented with another opportunity, but Ati Zigi once again came to Ghana's rescue with an excellent save.
Searching for a way back into the contest, head coach Otto Addo introduced fresh legs, bringing on Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu for Kwasi Sibo and Inaki Williams before later turning to Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu in an attempt to inject more attacking urgency.
Despite the tactical changes, Ghana struggled to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Colombian defence.
The South Americans remained a threat themselves, with Davinson Sánchez heading comfortably at Ati Zigi from a corner before substitute Juan Quintero sent a long-range effort narrowly wide.
Ghana pressed forward in the closing stages in search of a late equaliser, but they failed to seriously test goalkeeper Camilo Vargas as Colombia held firm to secure a place in the last 16.
Arias' early strike ultimately separated the two sides, ending Ghana's World Cup campaign while Colombia advanced to face Switzerland in the next round.
