2026 World Cup: Caleb Yirenkyi will easily replace Thomas Partey ahead of Panama clash - Laryea Kingston
Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has backed Caleb Yirenkyi to step up and fill the void left by Thomas Partey when the Black Stars begin their FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama.
Ghana will be without Partey for their Group L opener after the midfielder was denied entry to Canada due to ongoing allegations of rape and sexual assault. Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, the former Arsenal star was unable to secure a visa for the tournament opener.
His absence leaves head coach Carlos Queiroz searching for alternatives in midfield ahead of the crucial clash, but Kingston believes Yirenkyi has the qualities to seamlessly slot into the role.
Speaking to Joy Sports, the former Black Stars winger said the FC Nordsjaelland midfielder is well-suited to operate in the heart of Ghana’s midfield and has often been deployed out of his natural position.
"We will miss him (Thomas Partey), though, but we have someone that they have not been using him well. They are playing him out of position. Caleb Yirenkyi. I worked with him for three years, I promoted him from U15's to U18 when I was working with Right to Dream," he said on Joy Sports.
"For me, he is a holding midfielder. When you're watching him play at FC Nordsjaelland, they play him in the middle. He's grown up to be a box-to-box midfielder; he gets closer to the opponent's box, but he is a typical midfielder."
Kingston explained that Yirenkyi’s development at club level has equipped him to handle the demands of the role, highlighting his technical ability, work rate and understanding of the game.
"He works hard, and he is very good on the ball because he was well brought up. I gave him the opportunity at the U18S, and he took it, so for me, the best position is in the midfield. I think he will replace Thomas Partey very easily," he added.
Partey is expected to rejoin the Black Stars squad ahead of their second group match against England in Boston. Ghana will conclude their Group L campaign with a final fixture against Croatia in Philadelphia.
