Agyemang-Badu rejects Black Stars midfield comparisons ahead of 2026 World Cup

Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has dismissed comparisons between the current Black Stars midfield and previous generations, insisting that changes in the modern game make such debates increasingly irrelevant.

His comments come as scrutiny grows over Ghana’s midfield structure ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with questions lingering over balance, consistency, and long-term personnel choices in the centre of the pitch.

In the build-up to the tournament, discussions around the role of experienced midfielder Thomas Partey have intensified, with some observers urging continued reliance on his experience.

However, concerns over form and off-field issues have also fuelled uncertainty about his place in the national setup.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Agyemang-Badu argued that football has undergone a structural transformation that affects all teams, not just Ghana, making cross-era comparisons difficult.

“The mentality of players has changed, the football has changed. Football has become a bit scientific," he said.

"If I summarise it, I think it’s a generational change, and many teams have dropped in quality. If they don’t lose their midfield, they lose their defense or goalkeeping department or their strike force,” Agyemang-Badu added.

The Black Stars, who are set to compete in Group L, continue their preparations for the tournament as expectations build back home.

Black Stars have been drawn alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before taking on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group-stage match comes against Croatia on June 27.
