2026 World Cup: Ghana can make it to the knockout phase under Carlos Queiroz – Godwin Attram
Former Ghana international Godwin Attram says the Black Stars are beginning to show the tactical structure and discipline needed to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging consistency in selection and adherence to a clear game model under coach Carlos Queiroz.
His assessment follows Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales in a preparatory friendly in North America, a match he believes offered encouraging signs despite areas that still require refinement.
Attram noted that Ghana’s organisation without the ball stood out, even if their attacking transitions lacked sharpness in the opening stages.
"What I saw against Wales was encouraging," said Attram in an interview with Graphic Sports.
"We saw a team with a clear strategy. We defended well and, although our attacking transitions needed improvement, the coach identified the problem and made effective adjustments," he pointed out.
He also highlighted the impact of second-half substitute Ernest Nuamah, whose introduction added pace and directness to Ghana’s forward play. According to him, the change immediately improved the team’s ability to break forward with purpose.
"The coach recognised the problem and brought on Ernest Nuamah, who performed that role very well," Attram noted. "Even though he is returning from injury, his football intelligence remains evident."
For Attram, that in-game adaptability could prove decisive when Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17. He believes the ability to manage energy and execute a coordinated pressing system will be central to success.
"If the team executes the medium press effectively and conserves energy for the key attacking players, Ghana can be dangerous.
"With midfielders capable of winning the ball quickly and supplying the wide players early, we can trouble Panama and any other team in the group," he added.
He added that a stable defensive base, combined with clear tactical instructions, gives Ghana a realistic chance of progressing from a challenging group.
"That shows tactical awareness and flexibility," he said.
"If Queiroz remains disciplined, gives players clear responsibilities and sticks to a well-defined game plan, Ghana have every chance of progressing," Attram stated.
Ghana, four-time African champions, will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup. They are drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
