Otto Addo was unlucky to get sacked as Ghana coach – Marcel Desailly
French and Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly has expressed deep sympathy for Otto Addo, saying he was unlucky to get sacked.
Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024, was relieved of his duties in March earlier this year following four straight friendly defeats against Austria and Germany.
Desailly, who was born in Accra and maintains strong ties to Ghana, said he remains fond of Addo despite the pressure that led to his dismissal.
“I love the previous coach (Otto Addo),” he told Flashscore. “He was unlucky that they did not perform during the friendlies. But I believe that Queiroz will bring his own touch into the system. I talk about the system.
“In Ghana and many other countries, the system is that sometimes the coach has to adapt to what the management and administration are telling him, you see?"
Despite failing to secure qualification to the AFCON 2025, Otto Addo guided the team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia on June 27.
