Don't rule out Ghana winning 2026 World Cup - GFA boss Kurt Okraku
President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, says it is impossible to dismiss the Black Stars’ chances of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that football history repeatedly shows that surprises are always possible.
Ghana will be among 48 nations competing for the trophy in North America, with expectations building ahead of their fifth appearance on the global stage.
The Black Stars, however, head into the tournament under scrutiny after disappointing group-stage exits in both the 2014 edition in Brazil and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Despite those setbacks, Okraku believes Ghana should still be considered among potential contenders, pointing to the unpredictability of the sport and the strength of the current squad under preparation.
“I have seen bad teams win big tournaments, I have also seen good teams lose big tournaments, and I have seen good teams win big tournaments," he said on the Delay Show.
"So, you can never rule out any football nation, Ghana inclusive. We have a good team, and I want to win the World Cup. That is why we are doing everything possible,” Okraku added.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama—one of the most demanding groups in the tournament.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.
