Head coach of Uganda Laryea Kingston finally opens up on beating Ghana at U-17 AFCON

Head coach of Uganda’s Under-17 national team, Laryea Kingston, says he was simply doing his job when he guided Uganda to the 2026 FIFA Under-17 World Cup ahead of his home country, Ghana.

Uganda secured qualification after beating Ghana on penalties following a 2-2 draw in a playoff match at the Under-17 AFCON. The win earned Uganda a place at the World Cup, which will be held in Qatar in November.

Senegal went on to win the Under-17 AFCON title after defeating Tanzania 4-2 on penalties in the final.

Kingston was Ghana’s Under-17 coach in 2024 before resigning and later taking charge of Uganda.

Speaking at an event in Ghana about Uganda qualifying ahead of his home country, Kingston said:

“I was just doing my job. I will not wish anybody to be in that position that I was on that day. It was me standing between my job and my country so it was a very hard moment for me,” Kingston said.
