Real Madrid contact Michael Essien over move for Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi – Reports

Spanish giants Real Madrid have reportedly opened talks with former midfielder Michael Essien as they explore a potential move for highly rated Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjaelland.

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, the La Liga club have turned to Essien—who previously played under Jose Mourinho at both Chelsea and Real Madrid and now works as FC Nordsjaelland assistant coach—to help facilitate discussions around a possible transfer for the 20-year-old midfielder.

Yirenkyi is said to be valued at around €30 million, with Real Madrid believed to be preparing an approach to secure his services ahead of growing European competition.

The report adds that FC Nordsjaelland previously rejected an €18 million bid from a Premier League side during the January transfer window, underlining their stance on the player’s valuation.

Portuguese side FC Porto have also entered the race for the midfielder and are reportedly willing to offer around €20 million as they look to compete for his signature.

Yirenkyi has attracted attention following a series of impressive performances, including scoring for Ghana in a 1-1 international friendly draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium.

In the recently concluded Danish Superliga season, he made 30 appearances, scoring twice and providing six assists.

The former Right to Dream Academy graduate has also been included in Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, further boosting his profile on the global stage.
